Once upon a time, a young boy named Jason was hoping to go outside and play with his new Garden Explorer Kit. The kit was a recent gift and it contained: One magnifying glass, one pair of tweezers, one pair of gloves and a small container that allowed critters to be explored and set free with easy. Once he finished his breakfast, Jason’s parents gave him permission to head outside. He got dressed in his “outside” clothes, picked up his Garden Explorer Kit and went to open the door, when a loud voice boomed from the other side of the door, “YOU CANNOT GO OUTSIDE!”
Jason jumped back in fright and looked at his parents who were sitting and talking in the lounge room, unfazed by the loud voice continuing to echo through trees and mountains outside. He stood staring at the door, unsure if he was brave enough to try and open it again. He took a deep breath as he mustered the courage to reach out, twist the door handle and pull the back door. Jason couldn’t see anyone but, again, the deep, bodiless voice called out, “WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU’RE GOING?” This time, Jason didn’t flinch, though his eyes were wider than usual and his breathing was shallower.
He stuttered slightly as he spoke to the empty space in front of his door, “I… I… just want to go outside and explore in the garden.” Jason glanced over at his parents who were absorbed in their conversation and not paying any attention to Jason. He then realised he was on his own, and turned his attention back to the voice. After a moment of silence, the voice spoke again.
YOU ARE NOT ALOUD OUTSIDE!” Jason decided to see how serious the voice was and took a step outside.
The moment that his shoes touched the grass, Jason felt a single drop of water fall from the sky and land on his wrist. He immediately looked up and said, “I don’t know you, but you cannot stop me from going outside. If my mother and father say it’s OK to play outside, then it’s OK to play outside.” This comment was followed by another drop of water landing on Jason’s right arm and another on his forehead. “THEN LET ME SHOW YOU WHAT I AM CAPABLE OF!” the voice yelled. Jason noticed that the voice seemed to be getting closer when a streak of light, brighter than anything he had every seen, stretched for an instant from one side of the sky to the other.
“STAY INSIDE, YOUNG JASON!” said the voice before sending significantly more water drops to land on the boy.
Jason was not one to be told what to do by someone who wasn’t his mother or father, so, standing outside in his now wet clothes, he decided to yell back at the mysterious voice. “You don’t get to tell me what to, so let me show YOU what I am capable of!” He marched back into his house and, several minutes later, reappeared dressed in his special yellow armour and carrying his Garden Explorers Kit. Jason stood in the middle of his garden, giving the voice a long, hard look at his new nemesis before walking over to begin exploring the garden bed in his backyard. Much angrier now, the voice starting booming while sending bolts of light and heavy drops of water down to send Jason back inside. “YOU WILL GO BACK INSIDE!” the voice repeated again and again.
“YOU GO BACK TO WHERE CAME FROM!” Yelled Jason, surprising himself with the strength of his voice. After the long battle, Jason’s determination to explore his garden started to pay off, and, out of fear, the voice, the light and the water, all retreated into the distance.
From then on, if Jason ever heard so much as an echo from the voice, all he had to do was step outside, and the voice would retreat in recognition of Jason’s superiority.
